MU yang selalu kalah saat berduel dengan City dalam dua laga terakhir di Liga Inggris, berambisi memetik hasil maksimal akhir pekan nanti. Musim lalu, Wayne Rooney dkk. kalah telak 1-6 saat berlaga di Old Trafford, sedangkan di kandang City mereka kalah tipis 0-1.
Ferguson yang sadar bahwa City kini sudah jauh lebih kuat, lantas menyatakan bahwa jika timnya berhasil menundukkan City, maka hasil itu bakal menjadi salah satu kemenangan terbaik yang pernah diraih oleh tim asuhannya.
Ditambah lagi saat ini kedua tim sedang bersaing ketat dalam perburuan gelar, maka tambahan tiga poin bakal menjadi krusial. MU saat ini memuncaki klasemen dengan raihan 36 poin, sementara City ada tepat di belakangnya dengan selisih tiga angka.
“Jika kami berhasil menang (di hari Minggu), maka itu akan menjadi salah satu hasil terbaik yang pernah kami raih. Mereka sangat bagus, tim yang bertenaga dengan pemain-pemain besar,” ucap Fergie di MUTV.
Tapi untuk mewujudkan hal itu, Fergie terlebih dulu harus membenahi lini pertahanan yang musim ini terlihat rapuh. Dalam 15 pertandingan yang sudah dilalui, MU sudah kebobolan 21 gol.
“Itu tidak akan mudah jika kami bertahan seperti saat melawan Reading, kami akan berada dalam masalah,” ujar manajer berusia 70 tahun itu.
“Yang terpenting adalah kami bisa memetik pelajaran dari kesalahan yang kami buat dan melakukan sesuatu dari hal itu. Kami perlu menemukan sebuah solusi,” imbuhnya.
Setelah laga ini, kedua tim sudah ditunggu jadwal padat yang biasa dilakoni oleh tim-tim Inggris di menjelang pergantian tahun. MU dan City akan melakoni sedikitnya lima pertandingan hingga tanggal 1 Januari nanti.
